PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

This weekend I was in Tucson, Arizona for a special screening of the horror movie Paranormal Activity. It's a haunted house affair and is playing in select cities right now.

It's the scariest movie I've ever seen.

Seriously.

I've never been so scared by a movie before, and I've seen a lot of movies, friends. There's a lot of talk and hype floating around about this flick, but let me be clear: this movie delivers in spades and it will screw you up.

I saw it Saturday night/Sunday morning at a 12:01 screening, and I've been having trouble sleeping ever since because of it. I'm not kidding around. I'm almost 30 years old now and I've been sleeping with all the lights on.

If you like the show "Ghost Hunters", the 1963 version of The Haunting, The Innocents, The Exorcist, The Entity, or Stanley Kubrick's version of The Shining, then I highly recommend finding Paranormal Activity wherever it's playing and watching the shit out of it.

It's a horror movie that will stay with you. I can honestly say it's scarier than all of those movies put together. Yes, sure, it's from the old-school, less-is-more approach to ghost stories, but those are the ones that always linger in the mind and deep in the soul long after the final reel has run through the projector.

This movie feeds on your fears.

It will fuck you up.

"Rearrange"

I had a pretty vivid dream the other night about this song in which I was recording the final mix for it. I woke up, wrote down the lyrics and figured out the tune as best I could on the ol' piano and I recorded it. I'm still fuzzy on what exactly this little diddy means, but The Kamikaze Snowmen were gracious enough to post it up on the Snowcast.

So here's my dream. Make of this strange little thing what you will.

Small Scream

Well, I finally completely filled up a large 100-page Moleskine sketchbook. I've now embarked upon filling up a brand new small "pocket" Moleskine sketchbook. The picture above was actually drawn at 3.5 x 5.5 inches, hence the small in the scream.

"Conspiracy"

You can now "go green" as frequently (and as stupidly - since "going green" is stupid) as you'd like with The Kamikaze Snowmen's new smash hit song "Conspiracy".

Tell your friends! They probably all know already, though, since the CIA is monitoring this blog very, very closely, and all of your friends are ex-KGB and have been plotting your death since 1995.

It is facts.

"The Song Stuck In My Head"

Rebecca Trumbo has written a pretty sweet song performed by herself and her husband Josh for The Kamikaze Snowmen's Kamikaze Snowcast.

Oh, and to toot my horn for a moment, Yours Truly added a little piece to the song, too. See if you can spot it. Er, hear it, rather. It's not exactly difficult to miss. As you would expect, my addition is the really stupid part of the song. Towards the end. You'll see.

Oh, and thanks, Becky, for the compliments via the Kamikaze Snowmen's Facebook account! I appreciate it! And I'm sorry that jingle is stuck in your head, but you only have yourself to blame for its creation! Ha! Take that! Er. I mean, thanks!

Patrick Swayze

Patrick Swayze died Monday. That's a total bummer to me. I grew up watching Red Dawn, Road House, Ghost, Point Break and, yes, even Dirty Dancing, among others. For a while there, Patrick Swayze was the fucking man.

Pancreatic cancer will kill the shit out of you, though.

That really sucks. We now live in a Swayze-less universe. And I mean absolutely no disrespect on this one.

Okay. Well. That being said, I gotta go watch Red Dawn again right this instant to pay tribute.

"WOLVERINES!"

Chillin' In Gettysburg, Circa 1863

Evidently, people were very stiff and had weird-ass left hands back then.

Or maybe it's just the drawing.

Eh, they can't all be winners.

Graphic Novel

Above are the first 8 pages of a graphic novel I started on a while ago. Each page is one panel drawn at 5x8 inches. All done using a regular old disposable Pilot pen.

I was going to wait until I had more of this project done to post any of it on ye olde blog here, but now I'm having to wrap my brain around starting all over from scratch on this comic due to the fact that I've discovered the Pigma Micron pens which allow me to draw smaller than ever before. I mean - the idea behind a body of work like this (especially a graphic novel) is consistency in style, right? And I want to make this book look better than anything else I've ever done. Besides, when it's all said and done, the 8 pages above didn't take nearly as long to draw as they look.

Now, if I only had more time to work on anything right now, I'd be just fine. Too bad I can't do this stuff for a living, huh?

Censored

Oh, and, hey, I finally saw the new-ish X-Men Origins: Wolverine flick, and I thought it was pretty good. Sure, it had more than a few silly moments here and there and waaaay more than a few uber-cliched shots of looking up into the heavens and screaming, but it was a fun time and I got what I wanted: Wolverine going around getting pissed off and slashing people. This ain't Shakespeare, folks. It's freakin' Wolverine. Why did everyone think it was a total pile of crap? The opening credit sequence alone was worth the price of admission. And if you don't dig on the Jackman, then there's always Ryan Reynolds and the dude who played Gambit. Which reminds me - freakin' Gambit is in it, and he's pretty badass, so that's reason enough to like it! You fools.

I suppose you can't please everyone.

Except me, I guess.

Part 3: Human Apocalypse

The Kamikaze Snowmen's epic Apocalypse Apocalypse saga comes to an end with the staggering third installment: "Human Apocalypse". March along, humanity. March along towards the end of everything.

Below is the hand-painted logo I created for this song. Roughly 5x8 inches, acrylic on cardboard.

Stay tuned for an epilogue/bookend of sorts which is currently in the works. Then the whole 20+ minute affair will eventually be available for download as one mind-bending, life-altering, soul-crushing, zombie-squashing, robot-avoiding, sun-destroying-the-Earth track. It will change your life.

Lobotomy

So I can't afford a good set of Copic markers, so I went and grabbed the next best thing: Prismacolor Markers. These things are great! I got five shades of Cool Grey, a couple of Blacks, and a couple of blenders. They're still pretty pricey, but It's almost like doing a dark watercolor wash without watercolors or a wash. I'm so pleased with these markers. The allow me to draw very quickly again, which is what I always loved to do (my pen and ink drawings of late can be very time-consuming).

Anywho. Above is the Photoshop-tinkered version of the Lobotomy Girl which I quite like. Below is the original done in Cool Grey Prismacolor Markers. Enjoy!
