The Non-Bald-Headed Man

Above is The Non-Bald-Headed Man - notorious arch-enemy of heralded super-spy James Pondscum, agent number double-oh-seven-four-oh-eight-six-nine and three-fourths (00740869 3/4 for those of you who can't read). Dig it.

Eleanor

Just got done watching the Oscars, and I gotta say that Hugh Jackman did a really great job hosting. Who'd a thunk it? He's a song and dance man and a really sweet guy to everybody instead of being like most of the past hosts just making jabs at all of the celebrities.

Still stunned Mickey Rourke didn't win, but glad that Sean Penn gave him a shout out during his acceptance speech.

Still haven't seen SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, so I was constantly annoyed by how many awards it won. Really, I just wish THE DARK KNIGHT had been nominated for everything, because I would've had something to root for. As it stands, I was glad to see Heath Ledger's posthumous win for Best Supporting Actor.

My favorite bit, however, was Tina Fey and Steve Martin. In the midst of presenting some kind of screenwriting award or something, Martin stopped mid-speech and noticed Tina Fey's eyes gloss over at him and a strange smile on her face. "What are you doing?" He said, and she couldn't take her dreamy eyes off of him. He raised his hand and said sternly, "Don't fall in love with me." Hilarious.

Anywho. The Oscars are over. I'm sure I'll love Slumdog and be glad it won once I see it, but right now I would have preferred something like Benjamin Button or a Brad Pitt and David Fincher win. But I'm never pleased with the Oscars, so whatever.

At least Kate Winslet finally won an Oscar, right?

I'm re-watching BAND OF BROTHERS. Haven't seen it in years. It was on sale at Target for 20 bucks. Man, I remember when it cost $100 way back when it first came out. Regardless, it's super dooper good. And now that I know who Simon Pegg is, I recognize him in it! It's so weird seeing Shaun of the Dead fight with David Schwimmer instead of zombies. And with an American accent, no less. Weird.

I saw the film PUSH, and it totally rocks ass a lot more than I figured it would. I really wanted more when it was over, but it doesn't look like it's making too much crazy money, so there may not be a sequel. Which sucks, as it sets itself up for a sequel pretty good in the end.

The entire time, though, I kept thinking:

Man, I want super powers.

March, Basterds!

The teaser trailer for Quentin Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS is up over at Yahoo (just do a Google search, and you'll find it). It doesn't seem to resembe the 1978 original at all, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It looks really kickass and - strangely - really, really funny. Maybe it's Brad Pitt's hammy monologue, but the entire affair makes me crack a large and wicked grin not unlike Eli Roth's grin in said trailer. Suddenly, August can't come soon enough.

Fire It Up

A quick update to anybody who cares: my email address at awrymovie@hotmail.com hasn't been working too well lately for the past long while now. I haven't been able to send or receive anything for quite some time due to some craziness between Microsoft, Hotmail and my Mac which I have yet to figure out. So, until further notice, if you need to reach me, it would seem I'm only available through my yahoo address, which is terbybrown@yahoo.com. Thanks again, all. Take care and have a great weekend if you're not already!

Milkman

Oh, it's Friday the 13th today and no one cares aside from the fact that the new "Friday the 13th" film (brilliantly entitled "Friday the 13th" even though it's actually a sequel and not a remake) opens nationwide.

I won't be seeing it. It's by the same guys who remade the astoundingly good 1974 TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE into an astoundingly boring remake. How you can have Jessica Biel in a wet t-shirt running from a chain saw wielding maniac and still be boring is beyond me, but the remake managed to do just that. The same band of filmmaking morons also remade the really good 1986 "THE HITCHER" with Rutger Hauer as the most evil man in the world into a crap version with Sean Bean in the Hauer role. I mean, I like Sean Bean and everything, but he's no Rutger Hauer, that's for damn sure. Those remakes sucked my ass bigtime, so why would I watch the new "Friday"? The original is not a masterpiece of cinema or anything (unlike the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre in my humble opinion), but it had its moments. Hell, it even had Kevin Bacon! This one has even less to recommend it. The only thing it's really got is some slick photography and the fact that it opens on Friday the 13th of February, which is followed by Friday the 14th of February - which is conveniently Valentine's Day, and nothing says "date movie" like "crap ass slasher movie", I guess.

Seeing the credentials of those involved, I'll just wait for video and probably end up fast-forwarding through most of it.

...now if only it had been in 3D like MY BLOODY VALENTINE (which is a freakin' remake as well), I probably would have dragged my dumb ass out to see it. Why? Because I'm a sucker, that's why.

Kamikaze

I keep forgetting to mention that I finally saw the excellent LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. It's a perfect antidote for those that disliked the film version of TWILIGHT. Hell. Forget Twilight altogether - LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is the best damned vampire movie I've seen in a good long while (give or take 30 DAYS OF NIGHT). In fact, it's pretty much the best horror movie I've seen in a while. There's no way something that beautiful or wonderful or dead-on and perfect came from an American filmmaker, right? Right. How Swede it is.

Doorway

I just got in from a late screening of CORALINE in 3D. Boy, what a creepy ride. Recommended for children and adults alike. It's creepy and beautiful stuff. From author Neil Gaiman (one of my faves) and director Henry Selick (of The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach). It's incredibly enjoyable. And did I mention that it's creepy? Yeah. It's creepy.

Leathergirl

I finally saw ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO and I gotta say I loved it. I say any movie that is as raunchy as that one but still manages to be friendly and funny and tender needs to win some kind of award. I mean, the thing is just so darn likable. And in this day in age, two roommates deciding to make a porno to pay off all their debts isn't too far a cry from the reality we live in, is it? Oh, and stick around after the credits, there's more funny to behold.

Behind You

Been watchin' a lot of movies of late, but someone mentioned I hadn't blogged about it here. So here goes, real quick like:

THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES (1976) - Is there a better movie than this? Seriously. And I'm not even the biggest Clint Eastwood fan in the world, but this thing is freakin' great all the way around. It's badass and really funny. First time I saw it I was a wee lad of 11 or 12 sitting with my Dad. Well, it's aged incredibly well. There's not a false note in it. Anywhere. Its awesomeness is nearly unrivaled.

THE INGLORIOUS BASTARDS (1978) - soon to be remade by Quentin Tarantino (under the title INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS for some odd reason - and with Brad Pitt). The original is really kickass. It's a big, mean, dirty "men-on-a-mission" World War II movie not unlike The Dirty Dozen or The Guns of the Navarone. Only ass-kickier. And with Fred Williamson. Who kicks ass. Did I mention there's a lot of ass-kicking in this movie? Well there is. So there.

PURANA MANDIR (1984) - An Indian (dots, not feathers) Bollywood horror movie. That's right. A horror movie with musical numbers. In Hindu. You ain't seen nuts 'til you see this thing. It was the first of a long line of horror movies the Ramsey brothers made in India. It's three hours long and there is never a dull moment. Entertainment that goes to eleven, man.

ASSAULT! JACK THE RIPPER (1976) - a Japanese Nikkatsu expoitation movie that acts more like an artsy Quentin Tarantino movie than anything. It's about a cakemaker and a waitress deciding that the best erotica is killing girls with a cake knife. The movie may not sound like much, but it's actually extremely well made and a slow burn to watch. Good stuff.

Oh, and I finished Buffy season 3. Taking a break before hitting season 4.

Oh, and I acquired the MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 VOLUME 14! That makes 14 out of 14 wonderful volumes I know possess! It's got some real good ones on it, too. I love you, MST3K!

Anywho. That's it for now. Off to watch some bad movie goodness. Later, all! Have a great weekend!

And here's the extra special next-to-last page, featuring DJ Crazypants!

Boy, that thing got filled up quick thanks to my New Year's Resolution of at least one drawing in it a day. Now onto the next one. I'm trying out a Moleskine for the first time, and I have a feeling I'm going to have to be faithful to the brand from here on out. Here's my first spread:
