Ozymandias (And The Inevitable Decline Of All Men)

OmiGod, it's been almost a week since I've posted on the ol' blogeroo! This situation must be remedied immediately.

Unfortunately, I cannot show any artwork I've been working on lately, due to it being part of my notorious Super Secret Project (which is coming along swimmingly, thankyouverymuch).

Instead, I will show you what I've been up to in some very adorable photos.

Tax money came, I bought a new car with the Significant Other.

And today, we made another addition to our family. You see, we recently gave our little chihuahua Jezebel (B.K.A. Jezzie) to my mother. And we just got the replacement.

He's two months old, and he's a mix between a cocker and a dachshund.

We've named him Oz (short for Ozymandias - which was another name for Ramesses the Great, Pharaoh of the nineteenth dynasty of ancient Egypt). Go read Percy Shelley's 1818 sonnet for some great quotes like,

"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"

See the inevitable decline of all men below:

Our kitty Sasha was the only cat of ours that felt worthy of investigating the new dog, below:

...and it seems that Oz - although apparently frightened by the cat - was awarded a kiss:

"Hmph. I've had better," he seemed to say.

A good name for a puppy that's cute as hell and almost kind of pitiful looking, huh? Give him credit, though - he'd had a very long day and was very tired and grumpy when these photos were taken.

On a side note, I know Percy Shelley is regarded as awesome and all that, but I kinda prefer Horace Smith's sonnet (also entitled "Ozymandias", and published in the same magazine a month after Shelley's was) which goes a little something like this:

"In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.
We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragments huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place."

Or, if you prefer, we named the dog after Seth Green's character "Oz" in the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER television series. Either way, the name (and the dog) is a winner all the way around, right?

Cara Noir

A stylized pen-and-ink portrait of my sister Cara that is part of a bigger piece I'm working on for her. Mostly for shits and giggles, but it's going to be fun and really cool to look at when it's all finished. Boy, I made her look a little too evil, didn't I? Considering the 'tagline' for the poster I'm doing for her, hopefully the dark thriller 'noir' look is not too far from the mark.

You all will see soon enough, unless the above image gets vetoed by her and I have to re-do it, of course. Then it may take a little longer.

It's gonna be so cool, though!

Kenyan Death Stare

Mau Mau leader Field-Marshal Mwariama, circa 1961

Boy, imagine those eyes looking at you like that, huh? Dead in a heartbeat, methinks. That is, if it were 1961 at the moment.

Below is a 15 minute drawing of good ol' Wolverine done with a ballpoint pen right before leaving work this evening. I swiped the pose from the cover of the latest Wizard magazine featuring Hugh Jackman, but I tried to make it look a bit more like Wolverine and a little less like Hugh Jackman. I have nothing against Mr. Jackman or his portrayal of ol' Wolvie. I just think Wolvie should look a little more, I donno, brutish, I guess. Normally I don't post any drawings of superheroes or copyrighted characters, but I just did this one so quickly and it ended up looking kind of good and I just couldn't resist. And that new 'Wolverine' flick better be as balls as the trailer for it is. That's all I'm saying. Enjoy.

Awkward Pause

Man, having to go back to work after a vacation just plain sucks, you know? Anywho, I don't know who the guy above is, but he's downright fugly and strange, isn't he?

I'm Back, Baby, Back Ribs, Sexy Back (Bringing) - Wait, What?

Above is a Moleskine page I drew last Tuesday night before driving 22 hours to Mississippi.

I picked up some really amazing Pentel brush pens while in MS, and below are some quick little diddies I did with them. Man, I really dig using the brush pens. They really have a completely different feel and look than my traditional pen and ink stuff, huh?

Anywho. I drove back from Mississippi as fast as I could on Sunday afternoon (another 22 hours back) so I could get to work by Monday at 2:00pm. About the time I was arriving in Phoenix on Monday, of course, my boss called and said not to bother coming in because our software upgrade is simply not working (as predicted by many). So I and my significant other (or "better half", if you prefer) slept the day away and rested happily. Yay for the trip! Yay for not dying of exhaustion or collision while on the road!

Oh, and to everyone who likes nipples (and who doesn't, right?), here's a small pen and ink with watercolor:

Later, all!

Trip Time

I've been neglecting to post lately, I know, I know, but that's because I've been doing a bit of overtime at work (actually, quite a lot of overtime) to gear up for a few days off. I'm driving down into the Deep South to visit my mother in Mississippi for her birthday over the weekend.

I'll post this past week's Margin Doodles during the days I'll be absent to bring everybody back up to ludicrous speed, so stay tuned in! There will be pre-posted drawings every day, I promise!

Yee!

Another Moleskine double-page spread.

And, no, I'm not on any drugs. Hard, street drugs, anyway, no.

Neglected House On The Water

My mother always likes to ask, "Why don't you ever do a nice landscape?"

"Because they're boring as hell, Mom."

Well, this one's for you, Mom. It actually looks better in the Moleskine sketchbook I drew it in. I tried to get rid of the page split in the middle via Photoshop magic, but you can see it if you know it's there, I suppose.

Either way, it was a fun little exercise.

But still boring as hell.

Unless, of course, you're like me and imagine that any moment a horde of zombies is going to walk up from the depths of those waters and invade whoever's squatting in that rundown old shack.

That's a little more interesting.

What's With Lucio Fulci And Eye Trauma?

I'm on vacation, so I'm not drawing quite as much all of a sudden.

Above is a quick little diddy that's a bit of an homage to Lucio Fulci's CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD. I actually prefer his film THE BEYOND, but I still can't resist that scene in CITY where the chick starts crying blood after seeing the ghost of the priest. And then, of course, she vomits up her entire digestive system, but who can cram all that into one little drawing?

R.I.P.

Just a quick post to let everyone know that I've died. That's right. You heard it here first: I am no more. You see, I accidentily blew up while trying to drink a 40-ton vat of boiling gasoline. Someone lit a cigarette at that very moment and ka-blooey.

So I'm dead.

So I won't be able to draw anymore, obviously.

Me being dead and all.

It's a shame really.

So no more posts here on the ol' blogeroo.

Since I'm dead.

Oh. Yeah...

...wait for it...

April Fools.

I TOTALLY GOT YOU, right?

Man, I am such a lame.
